Prague Airport modernized communication by connecting TETRA and TASSTA technologies

Václav Havel Airport in Prague, the largest international airport in the Czech Republic and the main gateway to the world. The airport is a place where tens of thousands of activities take place every day. From passenger handling to cargo handling to security and maintenance. Everything must be perfectly coordinated. Reliable and fast communication is therefore the absolute basis for smooth operation.

Challenge: Limits of TETRA narrowband communication

Prague Airport has long used the TETRA professional radio network, which provides secure and reliable voice communications for all operational units.
Although TETRA provides robust and encrypted voice communications, its narrowband nature, which limits the transmission of multimedia data. The technology does not allow the transmission of, for example, photos, videos or large documents.
Another limitation is the limited choice of terminals. TETRA radios are mostly single-purpose devices, designed primarily for voice communication, and do not allow the operation of modern applications.
With the growing need to share visual information in real time, it has become apparent that TETRA alone can no longer fully cover the current operational requirements of the airport.

Solution: Linking TETRA and TASSTA broadband technology

In 2024, Prague Airport in cooperation with DCom, Ltd. s ro pilot project to integrate the TASSTA communications platform, which uses 4G and 5G networks and is designed for mission-critical applications.
After a successful year of testing in a secure cloud infrastructure, the TASSTA platform was fully implemented into the airport’s internal infrastructure and connected to the existing TETRA network in 2025.

DCom provided architecture design, implementation and integration of both communication technologies. The result is a modern system that combines the reliability of TETRA voice communications with the performance and flexibility of broadband data transmission.

Key benefits of the solution

  • Unified communication: linking the TETRA voice channels with TASSTA functions enables seamless collaboration between users of both systems.
  • Instant information transfer: push-to-talk and push-to-video functions ensure fast, real-time sharing of video and audio.
  • Increased operational efficiency: the ability to transfer photos, videos and documents speeds up decision-making and improves response times when dealing with operational situations.
  • Integration of communication and applications in one device: using Android smart devices, instant voice communication and operational applications can be combined in a single work tool.
  • Safety first: precise location tracking with Bluetooth beacons, man-down function and automatic emergency notifications increase the protection of personnel in the field.
  • The future in 5G: an open, scalable platform ready for the development of new services and applications in a high-speed network environment.

Result: faster, safer and more efficient operation

The integration of the TETRA and TASSTA systems has brought Prague Airport a modern communication infrastructure that meets the current and future needs of air traffic.
The new system connects all key units – from security and maintenance to logistics and passenger check-in.
Instead of carrying several devices, employees now use one multifunctional device. The multifunctional device combines voice communication, data transmission and smart app operation.

Future orientation

The development of the TASSTA system opens up space for advanced multimedia functions and the creation of specialised applications for air traffic management, maintenance, security management or baggage logistics.
Prague Airport thus gains a communication solution that not only streamlines daily operations, but is also ready for the future digital transformation of airport services.
